What is ODP? What is ODP?
Sunday, September 20, 2009
The U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, or ODP as it is more commonly known, is a National Team Identification and Development Program for high level players.
What are the Benefits of Participating in ODP?
• Development as a player. The opportunity to train and play with the best players in one's age group
• Quality instruction from licensed coaches
• Quality competition. Also, for those who are selected for the state team, games against other state association ODP teams
• Exposure to regional and national team coaches
• The opportunity to represent one's state, region, or country in competition
• Exposure to college coaches
• Opportunity to participate in foreign tours
How are Players Selected?
Players are selected on the basis of open tryouts and invitations. These tryouts are conducted by state association coaches who are recognized for their ability to identify and train players with superior skills. Selection of these players is not an easy task. The state association Head Coach or State Coach will, in most cases, be assisted in the selection process by several other qualified coaches.
There are four steps to being selected as an ODP Ohio South State team player;
STEP 1: ODP District Training (Three locations – Cincinnati, Dayton & Columbus)
• There are four training dates in November (ODP District Training). Shortly after the last November training date;
o 1993 – 1996 age group players are selected to advance to STEP 2
o All 1997 – 1998 age group players are invited back for STEP 2
o All 1999 age group players are invited back for STEP 2
STEP 2: ODP Spring District Training (Three locations – Cincinnati, Dayton & Columbus)
• For those players selected, there are four training dates in early March (ODP Spring District training). Shortly after the last training date;
o 1993 – 1996 age groups are selected to advance to STEP 3
o 1997 – 1998 age groups players selected to continue, bypass STEP 3 and advance directly to STEP 4
o All 1999 players are scheduled to finish the ODP process for the year
• STEP 3: 1993 – 1996 Age Group ODP State Trials (One location – TBD)
For those players selected, there will be an ODP State trial weekend in late March. Shortly after the ODP State trial weekend, players are selected to ODP State Pool and are invited for ODP State Pool training (STEP 4). These players are announced on the OSYSA website.
• STEP 4: ODP State Pool Training (Gulley Park – Warren County)
Training sessions are held April to July. During the April – May time frame, further selection processes occur until the Ohio South State Teams are determined. These teams train until July.
o 1993 – 1996 age group players are invited to represent Ohio South at Regional camp
o 1997 – 1998 age group players are invited to represent Ohio South at Regional camp
o Although not scheduled at this time, 1999 age group players may be invited to attend some training sessions in April, May or June. There is no selection process and players do not attend Regional Camp.
Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player:
1. Technique
2. Tactical Understanding of the Game
3. Fitness and Athletic Ability
4. Attitude
What age groups are involved?
For the 2009 – 2010 ODP calendar year, the following age groups will form the state teams that attend Regional Camp;
• 1993
• 1994
• 1995
• 1996
• 1997
• 1998
• 1999*** No state team selected, will not attend Regional camp; developmental age group
What Should I do if I am Not Selected?
Tryout the following year!!! The ODP program is for youth players who are developing technically, tactically, physically and emotionally. We all develop at different ages and at different rates. For this reason, it should be noted that the ODP process is completely new each year. Our teams are filled with players who were not selected in any given age group the year before.
How Much does it Cost?
• The early registration fee for ODP is $55.00. After October 13th the standard registration fee is $75.00. Fee covers registration, four training sessions and t-shirt
• The early spring district training fee is $55.00. After February 12th the standard spring district training fee is $75.00. The fee covers four training sessions. There is no fee for the State Trial weekend. It is included in your spring district training fee.
• For those selected to the State Pool, the early state payment fee is $55.00. After May 7th, the standard fee is $75.00. Includes a minimum of four and a maximum of eleven training sessions (depending on how far you advance in the process).
• If a player is selected to Regional Camp, the camp fee is estimated to be anywhere from $550-$650. This includes Regional Camp fees, bus transportation to and from camp, meals, uniform (Shirt, shorts & socks).
1999 Age Group (new for 2009 – 2010 season)
Ohio South Youth Soccer association is proud to announce the addition of the 1999 age group for the 2009 – 2010 calendar year. This age group is designed to introduce the younger player to the ODP system and training environment that they will encounter the following year. As such – THIS IS A PURELY DEVELOPMENTAL AGE GROUP. Players will experience four training sessions in the Fall and four training sessions in the Spring receiving quality instruction from licensed staff (just the same as the older age groups). The cost will be the same - $55.00 in the fall and $55.00 in the spring. This group will not travel to Regional camp.
