Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Warrior Soccer Club?
The Warrior Soccer Club (WSC) is a full-year, competitive soccer program that competes at the most competitive levels in the State. Our club is an Adidas Premier Sponsored Club that includes a professional level player uniform/kit (at no extra cost to parents). This sponsorship by Adidas extends for more than two decades and is a testament to their interest to have our club be their representative in this region of the country.   We offer tryouts each spring to form girls and boys teams ages 8-18.  A team consists of 14-18 players for full field 11-a-side soccer (8 -14 players for depending upon the age from U-8 to U-12).

Why should I or my child be interested in Select soccer?
The Warrior Soccer Club program provides training and development to qualified players to assist them in advancing to play at the highest levels of play available. Many high school and college teams are chiefly comprised of players who have demonstrated their ability through Advanced Development Programs.  If your child has progressed through recreational soccer and wants to take their game and skills to the next level, Warrior Soccer Club can take them as far as they want to go.

What does the U in "U11" mean?
In the State of Ohio, teams are formed based on the players age and not school grade.  The U means ’under’ and the players age must be under the number on August 1st.  A complete age chart can be accessed at:  http://www.osysa.com/ageChart.html

What happens at tryouts?
Our teams are formed through a player tryout process.  Each player is assigned a tryout number at each tryout session.  Players will be identified by that unique number during the course of the tryout.  Players are directed in drills, small sided games, scrimmages, and speed and agility exercises during the tryout time.  Coaching Directors, Coaches, and guest evaluators base their selections on player skill and athletic ability demonstrated during the tryouts.  Players receive notification of their tryout results from the age group coaches following the conclusion of the last tryout session. Players unable to attend the last session are encouraged to notify the coaching staff immediately.  Returning players should not wear Warrior Soccer Club clothing during tryouts.

How long is the season?
Select soccer can be a year ‘round activity.  Teams generally start training for the fall season in July-August.  The Fall season generally begins before the end of August and runs through October.  Teams generally attend tournaments which may be local or out-of-state.  The number of tournaments varies per tea depending on age, skill level, ...etc.  Many teams conduct indoor training and participate in indoor select leagues from November through February.  Training for the spring season generally begins in March.  The Spring season runs from April through May.  Again, teams attend tournaments in addition to league play.  All Warrior Soccer Club teams participate in the Warrior Soccer Classic over Memorial Day weekend.

May my child play other sports?
Yes, particularly at the younger age groups.  During the spring and summer months especially, we understand that players may have other activities scheduled.  During the fall regular season, coaches expect players to be committed to their soccer team practices and games.

What is the difference between Premier and Select Soccer?
The terms “Select” soccer and “Premier” soccer are often used interchangeably, although there is a difference in the terms.  Both terms indicate that players must try out and be chosen by one of our coaches to make the roster for a team, unlike recreational soccer where everyone that signs up is guaranteed a spot on a team.  The “Premier” designation, refers to the top level of play at the league and state level.  Many clubs differentiate between "Premier" and "Select" teams requiring additional fees for Premier coaches and additional tournaments.  The Warrior Soccer Club offers all teams access to the same training at no additional cost.

What teams do Warrior Soccer Club teams play against?
Warrior Soccer Club teams compete locally in the Miami Valley Youth Soccer Assocation (MVYSA) as well as the Buckey Permier MOSSL League and Mid-West Regional Leagues.  Additionally, WSC teams compete against teams from across the United States including Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Michigan as well as International teams from Canada, Germany and the UK.

How expensive is Select soccer?
Select soccer is more expensive than recreational programs.  There is a base club fee for each team that varies depending on the age.  This fee covers adidas uniform kits, socks, adidas bag with logo, league fees, training equipment, coaching education, field rental expenses, club trainers and referee fees.  Addtionally, each team will have additional expenses depending upon the number of tournaments and other team activities.  The individual player fee is calculated based on dividing all team expenses by the number of players on the team roster.  An average fee for a sesaon is around $225.

Are there hidden costs?
While we wouldn’t call them hidden, there are additional costs associated with the sport.  Each player is responsible for the travel costs to tournaments and games.  Our most competitive teams may travel to in and out of state tournaments several times each season.  Some may require over night stays.  Each player is required to have a ball, water bottle, shin guards and cleats. The equipment cost of varies per player.  We suggest visiting Soccer Plus across from the Dayton Mall to be fitted with the appropriate equipment.  Warmups may also be purchased at an additional expense.

What is the time commitment?
Select soccer is a large time commitment--but that’s why most players join--because they love soccer!  Expect 2 to 3 practices a week that are from 1 1/2 to 2 hours long with the time of the day dictated by the coach and field availability.  This means practice times and days can both change so some flexibility is needed.  Tournaments are on weekends and coaches often use some weekends for "friendly" scrimmages set up with other Warrior teams or those teams from neighboring clubs.  These are all  key factors in developing player skill, team unity, and game strategy so it’s important that every player is committed.   Game times vary and are assigned by the league depending on field and referee availability.  In addition, parents are asked to volunteer to help with various duties on their specific team and are required to work during the Warrior Classic Tournament.  Managing a Select team is a big job and it takes a lot of help to make things run smoothly for the best possible experience for the team, but most team Managers will tell you that they treasure the experiences and wouldn’t trade it for anything!
